London: Lakshmi Mittal, British-Indian business tycoon offered US$1 billion to the royal family of the United Kingdom to buy Koh-i-noor diamond.
Koh-i-noor is considered as one of the most expensive diamonds in the world. In the past, India has tried to get it back but nothing happened. Even UK’s labour party MP Keith Vaz asked the British Government to return Koh-I-Noor diamond to India.
“What a wonderful moment it would be, if and when Prime Minister Modi finishes his visit, which is much overdue, he returns to India with the promise of the diamond’s return,” Vaz said.
After endless political requests to the British Government to return Koh-I-Noor diamond to India, Lakshmi Mittal offers to buy this precious diamond for US$1 billion, which is considered as one of the highest amount offered for any precious diamonds in the history.
An official of the British Government says, “According to my knowledge, the British Government would not return Koh-I-Noor diamond to India at any cost”.
“It is the pride of the United Kingdom and it would be considered as an insult if we return this precious diamond to India by taking money”, he further added.
Lakshmi Mittal was the sixth richest person in the world by Forbes in 2011 and recently drops to 82nd place with a net worth of US$16 billion. He is the Chairman and CEO of ArcelorMittal, owner of Karrick Limited and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers F.C.
“Lakshmi Mittal want to gift this precious diamond to his homeland on January 26, 2016”, said an official of ArcelorMittal on condition of anonymity.
World News Express contacted the office of the Queen Elizabeth II about the offer, but denied to comment anything.
